An affair before christmas5/22/2023 However, this theory doesn’t explain why some northern hemisphere countries, the United States, for example, celebrate Christmas in July. With a summer Christmas lacking the nostalgic ‘ chilly feels‘ of snowflakes, cosy fires, and crazy Christmas jumpers, people wanted to capture those magical Christmas moments that weren’t possible with a Christmas in summer.Ĭhristmas in summer doesn’t feel the same for those used to a winter Christmas. But, it seems likely to have been introduced by those used to Christmas in the northern hemisphere, moving to the southern hemisphere. It’s difficult to pinpoint where, or indeed when, it actually began.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells5/22/2023 Here are seven curious facts about Wells’s most unsettling work, which turns 125 this year. While it wasn’t as well received as some of the author’s other “science romances,” the book has become an indelible part of our pop-culture landscape, inspiring multiple film adaptations, radio dramas, video game characters, and a “Treehouse of Horror” segment on The Simpsons (“ The Island of Dr. Moreau spun the tale of a shipwrecked Englishman stranded on an island where a scientist is performing breathtakingly cruel surgeries on animals, hoping to transform them into humans. Sandwiched between 1895’s The Time Machine and 1897’s The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau-and forever changed the face of science fiction. In 1896, though, he published an uncharacteristically gruesome tale called The Island of Dr. Wells has been credited with predicting everything from the World Wide Web to the atomic bomb. As one of the formative voices of science fiction, H.G.

Ring shout review5/22/2023 How far is Maryse willing to go in order to stop these events? However, after the latest hunt, Maryse and her crew uncover a plot, which consists of conjuring more Ku Kluxes during a re-release of the film, The Birth of a Nation, in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Due to her Sight, Maryse is able to fight and to slay one group of monsters before they can corrupt humanity. In Maryse’s case, she can distinguish the Klan-the humans-from the Ku Kluxes-the supernatural monsters who wear the bodies of humans. After surviving a traumatic experience, Maryse discovered she has “The Sight,” which means she has the ability to “see” any and all creatures and beings from all of the fairy tales and folktales you’ve read and heard of as a child. Maryse Boudreaux is the protagonist, and she is a twenty-five-year-old monster hunter. Djèlí Clark writes his perspective of the KKK in his novella, Ring Shout. More than 100 years after the movie’s release, P. Praised for its cinematography and belittled for its racist portrayals of minorities, the film was responsible for the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, one of the most notorious hate groups in the United States of America. The Birth of a Nation remains as one of the most infamous films ever made. Inspiration and influence comes from anything from an ephemeral moment to a persistent belief from one line in a song to a passage in a story to a scene from a movie.

Gridlinked by Neal Asher5/22/2023 This is fast-moving, edge-of-the-seat entertainment, and a great introduction to the work of one of the most exciting new SF talents in years. And deep beneath Samarkand's surface there are buried mysteries, fiercely guarded. With the runcible out, Cormac must get there by ship, but he has incurred the wrath of a vicious psychopath called Arian Pelter, who now follows him across the galaxy with a terrifying psychotic killer android in tow. Now he must do without just as he's sent to investigate the unique runcible disaster that's wiped out the entire human colony on planet Samarkand in a thirty-megaton explosion. He has to take the cold-turkey cure and shake his addiction to having his brain on the net. Unfortunately Cormac is nearly burnt out, "gridlinked" to the AI net so long that his humanity has begun to drain away. Cormac is a legendary Earth Central Security agent, the James Bond of a wealthy future where "runcibles" (matter transmitters controlled by AIs) allow interstellar travel in an eye blink throughout the settled worlds of the Polity. Gridlinked is a science fiction adventure in the classic, fast-paced, action-packed tradition of Harry Harrison and Poul Anderson, with a dash of cyberpunk and a splash of Ian Fleming added to spice the mix.

However, it was so extensive that it became dull and monotonous. The back story and footnotes provided a sufficient foundation for the novel and the differences of ideologies in Strange and Norrell. Clarke did a thorough job with world-building. My main complaints are the same as everyone else. I had no ideas on how it was going to end while I was reading it.Īs a whole I really struggled with this book. Probably because I had literally no expectations. It was grand and fantastic, and I loved it. The magic reminded me of reading ancient mythologies. Sure, there were things that no longer worked, but it seemed that the greatest limitation was a magician's imagination. I love that there didn't seem to be any "rules" regarding the magic. I think my favorite part of the novel was probably the world building, which is good, otherwise I may not have made it through. He was an old man with a lot of bad ideas surrounded by bad people who influenced him to make bad decisions, but I felt that he was more naive than conniving and more stubborn than mean. Selfish and idiotic, maybe, but not evil or anything. He did a lot of despicable things, but I don't think his motives were ever despicable. I think it was because of the almost child-like excitement he would get whenever he and Strange would talk magic, and how much he cherished his books (cause I totally get that.). I actually grew to kind of like Norrell, although it took the entire book to get there.

Ink & Arrows by Shruthi Viswanathan5/22/2023 We collaborate with other cell and structural biologists to validate predictions from our models and generate data for the modeling. Title: Ink & Arrows Author: Shruthi Viswanathan Rating: 1/5Blurb (taken from Goodreads): An artist who inks magical tattoos. Three broad areas include (a) assemblies involved in regulating gene expression, including chromatin remodelers (b) assemblies at cell-cell junctions, and (c) cellular machineries involved in cell division such as centriolar and centrosomal protein complexes. Therefore, we use an integrative approach, combining various sources of available experimental data along with physics principles and statistical inference for structure determination. Opportunities exist in our group to work on several such assemblies. Structures of large assemblies are usually difficult to obtain using any single experimental method. They provide insight into how molecular machines function, how they evolved, how they assemble, and how they are regulated. These structures are key to understanding the mechanistic details of cellular processes. Broadly, we seek to understand protein organization in cells by characterizing their structures in binary complexes, macromolecular assemblies, and nanoscale architectures. Allegiant books in order5/22/2023 What we were left with at the end of book two was a long list of questions and an uncertainty as to what could possibly happen next. Tris and Tobias/Four had reconciled and decided to no longer keep secrets from each other. A video had been found which revealed that the city was sealed and the faction system put in place in order to fix the problems of the outside world, and that when enough Divergent had appeared they were to emerge into the larger world to fulfill that purpose. At the end of Insurgent the factionless had taken over, doing away with the faction system and killing the leader of the Erudite. Warning, this review contains spoilers for the previous books of the series, Divergent and Insurgent.Īllegiant, the third and final book in the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, picks up right where its predecessor left off.
